Jesper Sorensen is gearing up for his first coaching venture outside of Denmark, after being named the Vancouver Whitecaps' new boss.

Vancouver Whitecaps have announced Jesper Sorensen as their new head coach on a two-year deal.

The Dane was named as the successor to Vanni Sartini, who departed BC Place in November after just over three years in charge.

Sorensen, who was sacked by Brondby last month after just under two years at the helm, also oversaw the fortunes of Silkeborg and Fredericia in his homeland, as well as Denmark's under-21 side.

And the 51-year-old will hope to improve on the Caps' run to the first round of the playoffs last season.

"I am tremendously excited to join Vancouver Whitecaps," he told the franchise's official website. "It's a wonderful opportunity, and I'm very grateful.

"I'm here to help the team, win football games, as well as work with the players to make them better, and we will do it together."

"Jesper is known for his competitiveness, adaptability, and leadership, qualities that have proven to bring the best out of both his players and staff," added sporting director Axel Schuster.

"Throughout his career, he has delivered immediate success with his teams, whether that was securing promotion or competing for titles.

"His ability to improve individual players while also implementing a flexible, high-performing tactical system will be key to our continued growth. Jesper is the right leader to take us to the next level."
