Bologna edged past AC Milan for their first Coppa Italia title since 1974, much to the delight of Vincenzo Italiano.

Vincenzo Italiano was left to revel in the learnings from previous failings with Fiorentina after guiding Bologna to their first Coppa Italia success in 51 years.

Dan Ndoye's 53rd-minute strike secured Bologna their first Coppa, and major trophy, since 1974 as they beat AC Milan 1-0 in Wednesday's showpiece at Stadio Olimpico.

It marked redemption for Italiano, who had lost three finals in the last two seasons as Fiorentina boss, twice going down in the Conference League as well as the 2022-23 Coppa showpiece against Inter.

The Bologna boss lavished praise on his squad, rather than taking individual acclaim, having also secured Europa League football for next season with the Coppa crown.

“Those too were three very big disappointments," Italiano said to Sport Mediaset, referring to his previous role at Fiorentina.

"I didn’t honestly think I could get straight back out there and win it, but I did. I dedicate it to these lads, who are extraordinary."

Bologna headed into the 2024-25 campaign full of confidence, having qualified for the Champions League for the first time in club history under Thiago Motta, before he left for Juventus.

European football is now guaranteed for them again next term, with Bologna's 51-year wait for the Coppa the longest stretch between two titles for one club in the competition's history.

"After some disappointments, I think we deserved this, especially as we played a great game tonight," Italiano added.

"It was an incredible performance. We knew once again what Milan would do in the second half, so we responded.

"This incredible year is crowned with this trophy, which is what these fans deserved."

Bologna had not won in their previous three games, while Milan headed into the final with four consecutive wins across all competitions for the first time this season.

Luka Jovic passed up a golden opportunity in the first half, though Sergio Conceicao's side rarely offered a threat when chasing a leveller in the second period.

“We had a few initial difficulties, but then have been going from strength to strength, both as individuals and as a unit," Italiano added.

"Now please let me go and celebrate, because this is incredible!"
