Borussia Dortmund are into the quarter-finals of the Champions League after beating Lille, setting up a meeting with Barcelona.

Borussia Dortmund came from behind to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the second year in a row, after a 2-1 win over Lille in the second leg sealed a 3-2 aggregate victory.

The sides were level going into the second leg, after a 1-1 draw in Dortmund last week, with Lille striking first on Wednesday.

Jonathan David gave the hosts a perfect start, sliding a weak shot through the legs of Gregor Kobel, who should have done better to keep it out.

Dortmund pushed to restore parity, being denied in a stunning goal-mouth scramble shortly after before Pascal Gross saw a header skim the crossbar just before the break.

Niko Kovac's side came out with renewed purpose after the break and equalised in the 54th minute, Emre Can coolly scoring from the penalty spot after Thomas Meunier had tripped Julian Brandt.

Beier then scored a deserved winner for last season's runners-up, picking out the top corner with a stunning strike after Karim Adeyemi had struck the crossbar.

David had one last chance to level the tie for Lille but sent his first-time volley straight at Kobel as the French side failed to reach a first-ever quarter-final in the competition.

Dortmund will face Barcelona for a place in the semi-finals, while it was a cruel end for Lille, who had qualified directly from the league phase by finishing in the top eight, thanks to notable victories over Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Data Debrief: Dortmund dig deep

Dortmund have now progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the ninth time and have made it to this stage in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2012-13 and 2013-14.

Beier got the all-important winner, netting his first-ever Champions League goal, but Can's penalty proved just as valuable. He has scored all 12 of the penalties he has taken across all competitions, with five of those coming this term.

Serhou Guirassy got the assist for Beier's goal, moving him onto 14 goal involvements in the Champions League this season (10 goals, four assists). It is the joint-most by an African player in a single campaign in the competition, along with Mohamed Salah in 2017-18.

While Lille failed to reach a first-ever Champions League quarter-final, David did earn his own slice of history. He is now Lille's all-time leading scorer in European competitions with 13 (moving clear of Yusuf Yazici - 12), with 10 of those coming in this competition.
