Salah headlines Premier League Player of the Season shortlist

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch are among the candidates for the Premier League's Player of the Season award.
Mohamed Salah is one of three Liverpool players to be nominated for the Premier League's Player of the Season award, having fired Arne Slot's side to the title.
Salah needs just one goal involvement in Liverpool's final two matches of the campaign to match the single-season record for combined goals and assists (47), shared by Andrew Cole (1993-94) and Alan Shearer (1994-95).
Salah broke the record for a 38-game campaign as early as April 13, and he leads the Premier League charts for both goals (28) and assists (18) this term.
There have only been four instances of a player topping the charts for goals and assists in the same campaign in the competition – Cole in 1993-94, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in 1998-99, Harry Kane in 2020-21 and Salah himself in 2021-22.
Salah is joined on the eight-man shortlist by team-mates Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk, with Liverpool winning the title with four games left – only three teams have done so earlier (Liverpool in 2019-20, Manchester City in 2017-18 and Manchester United in 2000-01).
Nottingham Forest, who still have an outside chance of qualifying for the Champions League, have two nominees in Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White.
Wood has 20 Premier League goals this term, becoming just the second player to reach 20 goals for Forest in a campaign in the competition after Stan Collymore (22 – 1994-95).
Gibbs-White, meanwhile, has contributed six goals and eight assists for Nuno Espirito Santo's team, who are seventh in the table and guaranteed European qualification.
The playmaker's England team-mate Declan Rice is also nominated despite Arsenal's failure to push for the title, having created more chances (56) and more expected assists (5.5 xA) this campaign than he has in any other top-flight season.
Newcastle United's Alexander Isak is also shortlisted having scored 23 goals, second only to Salah, with Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo the final nominee, having netted 18 times.
The eight nominees for the Young Player of the Season award were also announced on Thursday, with Gravenberch the only player to be shortlisted for both.
Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen is in the running, as reports suggest Real Madrid are set to clinch a £50million deal to sign the Spaniard in advance of the Club World Cup beginning next month.
Huijsen has averaged 4.1 progressive passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League this term, the third-most among all centre-backs to play at least 1,500 minutes.
Chelsea's Cole Palmer could retain the trophy after landing it in 2023-24, though his form has tailed off since the turn of the year, only recording six goal involvements in his last 20 matches (four goals, two assists).
Forest winger Anthony Elanga, Arsenal centre-back William Saliba, Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers and Brighton's Joao Pedro are also on the shortlist, as is Liam Delap.
Ipswich Town frontman Delap is the first player to be nominated for Young Player of the Season while playing for a relegated team, and he is reportedly attracting interest from Manchester United and Chelsea with a £30million relegation release clause now active.
